Hi everyone. I'm an international applicant from the UK applying for top US universities. High school lasts six years here: I attended one for five years and I am currently at another school for my last year. Here are my options of teacher recommendations:

English Teacher (Old School)
Got the highest mark in the exam in my school while in her class, taught me for five years, great at writing references, knows me well.

English Teacher (New School)
Have a great rapport with her. Got the highest mark in the class for the essay she set us. We get into discussions about body image, mental health, etc. in her class, do a lot of presentations, teach each other, etc. I think her recommendation would show a lot of learning beyond the books we actually study and be able to mention the talks we have as a class.

Chemistry Teacher (New School)
Forgot my homework for her the first time I had her and she got pretty angry at me! However, since then she has started to like me more and helped me with things outwith timetabled classes. She could talk about the independent experiments that I'm doing.

History Teacher (New School)
Has written me a good references before which spoke a lot about my character. I baked brownies for her class, she knows that I am friends with a girl with visual impairment. However, she just left so I'd have to find a way of tracking her down which could be logistically difficult!

Could you please tell me which two teachers I should use?

Thanks :)

What are you applying to study? If a writing discipline, I say no harm in doing two English teachers. I’m fuzzy on the details of my second rec, but I’m pretty sure both of mine were from English teachers (applying to journalism school). If you’re applying for a science discipline, one should be from the Chemistry teacher. But I’d say your two English teachers sound the best as they can speak to both your academics as well as your character.

If I had to pick a major now, it’d probably be English Literature or history :)

I’d highly recommend getting a letter from both a Humanities and a Science/Math teacher irregardless of your prospective major.

I would definitely say your old English teacher; ones who have known you the longest will have the most details and anecdotes to include in a rec. Those are the memorable parts that will set you aside! Contrasting that achievement-based rec with the History teacher rec could provide a great insight into you as a person, inside and outside of class.

Check the colleges you are applying to - some specify one science/math and one english. If the colleges don’t specify, then do the two english ones.

I wouldn’t recommend two teachers from the exact same subject. Choose one english teacher and then either the history or science teacher, however, some schools require a science rec.

@guineagirl96 Decided that I’m definitely choosing the new English teacher and avoiding the chemistry teacher. Going to try and track down my history teacher but I suppose getting one recommendation is a start!
