Should i give it a shot??

I am wondering whether or not i should apply to cornell. My SAT score is 2170(CR+M=1400) and my subject test scores are 700 in math2c and chem and 720 in physics. i have a 112 in the toefl and am in the top 5% of my class. My counselor says that it isnt worth applying to because my scores are too low. I will be applying as an engineering major. So my question is, is it worth a try??

The thing about Cornell (which you will probably hear a lot) is that it’s admissions are very fit based. If you have ECs and awards that show a passion towards your field, they can sometimes outweigh certain statistics.

However, the engineering department at Cornell is extremely competitive and one of the best in the country. Your scores are not too low to not apply but they are certainly on the lower side of the applicant pool.

Like I said, if you have impressive awards like state, regional, or national ones in engineering-like clubs like TSA, Robotics, or awards in Siemens, etc., they can definitely forgive the points you lack in SATs or other stats.

In the end, if you write passionate essays, have strong ECs, and have a well - rounded app, there is no reason to not apply. The whole reason Cornell is divided in schools is so that they can admit students built for the certain fields in the departments and who will show the most potential for success. Unlike other universities, each school in Cornell picks certain parts of the application that matter for the major/field and place emphasis on those during admissions.

Sorry for the long msg, but I hope this helps!

Give it a try. You never know if you’ll make it, and your scores definitely are in the acceptable range. There have been people accepted to Princeton on a 1500 SAT I, and 2.9 GPA, to give you an idea of how the score range really varies based on other factors (granted, this was probably a sports scholarship or something). It’s really about how you spin it; your essay needs to be good, you should present yourself as a unique individual, and get teachers who really know you for your recommendation letters. The rest is up to chance.

Hope this helps.

In short, do whatever it takes for what you truly want. Discouragements are only there to hurt you, not help you. Good luck :)

Based solely on your scores (which are nowhere near as important as people think) you’ll be on the lower side of engineers here (maybe 30th percentile?) so it’s definitely worth a shot!

Thank you for all the replies people, that was really helpful

dude dont worry, i got in ED this year and you’re scores M+CR was the same as mine, and subjects was 10 point difference in both … ( almost the same ). I was top 3% , 5% is good enough. But my EC’s and essays were stellar and recs were great. Give it a shot man, you never know.
