Should I give up?

Ok so I applied for financial aid as an OOS student. As I expected, I received basically nothing. I desperately want to go to Austin but I know my family will not be able to afford it because of our financial condition. However, they did send a paper saying that we could call if we have special financial circumstances that may have arose or tell them anything that the college could not see on the FAFSA form. To make it short, the reason we are struggling is because a couple of months ago, my father's secretary embezzled almost every dollar in his company, leaving him and his company almost bankrupt. Do you think if he were to call, they could reconsider or should I just cut my losses and look elsewhere? Be brutally honest.

I think you should call them. the worst that will happen is that they choose not to reconsider, but if you don't make an attempt, you would never know. College is a major part in life so do all you can now and if the cards land right for you, then all your efforts would certainly be worth it. If you don't take action, then you might regret it later and wonder what would have happened if you did.

I'm sorry about your father and his company. Embezzlement is a serious issue and I think UT would at least give it some serious thought.

Of course call.

Thanks a lot, I'll call tomorrow. I just didn't know if it was a waste of time with me being out of state and all.

UT is barely kind to in-state students with financial AID...best of luck but dont expect anything...

if you really want a UT degree than i recommend you apply to transfer there in the future...

I think it would be better to write out an explanation of what happened and how this impacted your family's finances and give this to them in writing. (Try asking on cc Financial Aid forum and see what the knowledgeable people there think.)

Out of state tuition at UT is pretty expensive compared to in state tuition, though.
