Should I go for my MBA in marketing? As a back-up option?

I'm currently a junior in my undergrad studying journalism with a focus in integrated marketing communications. I enjoy working with media, thinking creatively for stories, pitches, and campaigns.

I started taking some marketing classes at my college's business school for fun and I find that I can grasp the concepts easily and have been doing very well in my classes. Although I don't enjoy it as much as marketing communications, advertising, or PR, I still think I would like it.

I am a creative person and want to do a creative job, which is why I chose my major to focus on media. In a perfect world, I would want to assist in advertising and PR campaigns (as a creative director, or something like that).

However, I started realizing that having an MBA may be a good back-up option. Not to mention, I would assume having this would make me look more desirable no matter my position.

Thoughts? Advice?

Get in to the job market first. If you can not get the positions you desire without the MBA then consider getting one. You will be better prepared for your studies having some work experience. Think about working for a company they will help pay for the mba. I believe many large media companies will supplement the cost of a graduate degree.

You need work experience to get an MBA anyway, so go work for a few years after undergrad. Try to get a creative career if you want; otherwise, attempt to get something related that sounds interesting, or marketing work.

If after 2-5 years you can’t get a creative job OR you decide that you prefer the business side of marketing and advertising and you need an MBA to move into the role you want, then go get one.
