Should I go to a Model UN Competition or a Biology Competition?

Hi guys, I'm sort of in a dilemma right now. A model UN conference conflicts with a biology competition.

At my school, we only go to one main Model UN overnight conference since we have a small delegation. We have been planning for this for a very long time. However, during the same weekend there is a Neurobiology competition. The problem is, I'm not sure if I really enjoy Model UN that much because I don't see the real application of it... I joined freshman year because of the awards (lol). I've only got one minor award from a smaller regional conference, so I would like to get more awards especially at a larger, National conference. But at the same time, I think that I am more passionate about neuroscience even though that competition is a lot smaller and is administered on a regional level. It is called the Brain Bee btw, and it is very hard to place nationally from my region. I already have plenty of science awards, but not enough Model UN awards.

As a junior, which competition do you think would be best to go to?

I honestly think you can’t go wrong with either. It’s not always about the awards though. Maybe if you try the biology competition you’ll have a fantastic experience and learn something new. Maybe you’ll get far in the UN conference. It depends on how much you want to be involved in the two, and where your passions lie.

It seems you would like the biology competition more! Go for it.

The neurobiology contest sounds awesome. And honestly, based on what you said, it sounds as if you care a lot more about science than Model UN. In the end it’s your choice, and you don’t want to regret doing something just because of the chance of getting academic awards. Plus, if you’re planning to major in a science, I can imagine that the biology contest would help you more.

Good luck!
