Should I go to a Prospective Student Tea event?

I’m considering going since it’s only ten minutes away from me, but…I’m kinda worried about being maybe one of very few who attend…that can be both a good and bad thing- I can talk to alumnae more…I’m also not a very strong candidate so I feel that I should not attend…

I have a 3.85 W GPA and 3.5 UW GPA. SAT (New): 1400
So I’m not a particularly strong candidate. I did, however, write a pretty neat supplement (I think so. I liked it a lot and was satisfied with it)

Are you interested in the school? If so, by all means go: You will both learn a few things about the school that may inform your thinking, and also register a higher level of interest. (Assuming you’re actually interested.)

I hope you go. Teas hosted by alum clubs are such a nice way to learn about the power of networking, not just at Smith but within the Sisters community. I’m surprised that this one is prior to RD decision release, as I planned yield events for accepted students on behalf of my local Wellesley club in April. Given your status as a candidate for admission treat it as an interview, show your enthusiasm for Smith, and you’ll do fine! Best of luck!

Absolutely go. And don’t sell yourself short on candidacy. A 1400 is pretty impressive.

My DD and I attended one a few weeks ago in South Florida. There were a few other prospective students (2) and a nice sized group of Alumni. We both were really happy that we went. I was impressed by how open and accepting the Alumni were. They each went around the room introducing themselves and then talking about Smith.
My daughter applied regular decision so she shared your sentiments on getting too attached/excited and not knowing if she is accepted.
My suggestion- go - enjoy yourself, listen more than you speak and either way you will meet a strong, inspiring room full of women.

My D would go just for the tea.

@SFLmom – where was that? South Florida here, too.

Thank you all for your answers!

I think I am going to attend the event. But, I’m a bit nervous- should I wear casual clothing or go for slightly formal clothing? I really don’t know what you should wear to these events. Should I even bring my resume? (I don’t think I should, but…should I?)

@edgeook8 - yes in Coral Gables & of course it was the weekend of that the ATV riders were on the highway. We were behind a horrible accident and were late to the party. Very sad as the rider passed away,
@MuffinLord1 - we are in South Florida so my daughter wore dress pants and a cute shirt with flats. Most of the alumni were in similar outfits or sundresses. I attended with her and wore pants and a cardigan set.
I would not bring my resume- I do not believe they have any say in admissions. For us it was more about getting to know the alumni and their take on the school.

The ones my daughter went to were hosted by recent grads and were very much jeans and a sweater type of event.
We dropped her off and she texted when she was ready to go.

The teas confirmed that she liked this group of people and would be happy attending college with them.

I’m back with some news. I went to the event yesterday and there were WAY MORE people than I anticipated. I think around ten or twelve girls came with a parent or both in some cases. So there were a lot of people at the tea. Oddly enough, a few girls wore business type dresses, while others wore jeans +sweaters and a few wore pretty casual clothes. It was a mix of attires so I didn’t feel too bad about wearing a sweater.

Also food was good. Haha. I love scones and cookies. Chips and humus was also a plus.

I found the tea helpful a bit and a nice way to socialize with other prospective students in person, but…I think maybe it’d have been better to have an actual admissions officer around or set up a skype call with one…To a point, the alums were quite helpful, but it’d have been better to get accurate and sure answers right away there.
