Should I go to Columbia GS??

Hello all, I have just been admitted to GS and I’m trying to get a feel of how its like to be a GS student? Any current GS students regret going? I should also mention that my entire GS education will be funded by a scholarship so at least I won’t have that over me.

I feel like I’m a second rate student, pushed back in the corner vs the columbia college kids, we don’t get nearly the same respect as the CC kids either. I feel like the GS school is just a cash cow for the school. Also be warned, some of the staff troll websites like this and post 3 page replies defending the school, damage control I guess. Where else did you get in? I’m thinking of applying to transfer next year, I’m thinking Upenn, or stern.

Hi, thanks for your input. I have heard some positive and some negative experiences, which is why this is a hard decision to make. I got into Sarah Lawrence and NYU.

I also recently got into Columbia GS and Fordham PCS. Being that I’m a vet, my tuition will be covered completely by Fordham. However, that won’t entirely be the case with Columbia. I’ll have to assume some out of pocket costs. I’m having a hard time deciding if I should eat the cost for the Ivy League education or not.

@xm0409 Honestly, I’d love to go to NYU. I have a couple friends there and I honestly feel like I would just fit in there.
That and I like the Stern school of business.

@happilygilmor I had a friend who got a full ride to fordham due to football who graduated 2 years ago, he said he loved it, idk if you’re into sports but he said it was awesome. He just hated the NY weather, but you’ll get that with GS too. Other than that I don’t know, I just know that I don’t feel all the extra money I’m paying at GS is worth it tbh. Im gonna owe 100k by the time school is done if I stay here.

@Lick3d, what is the culture/vibe like at GS? Are you enjoying the quality of your education? Are there good inter ship opportunities?

Also @Lick3d, with costs aside–would you still recommend Columbia GS? Do you notice any students in their 20s there?

I know this reply is late, but I hope it will be good reference for others in future.

to happilygilmor, there is no culture/vibe at GS. You gotta understand that CC/SEAS/GS, whatever, they are just administrations.

In every class, there will likely be a big group of CC students, SEAS students, and a few GS students.

“At GS?” Where IS GS?

Truth: GS teaches their kids in a very special area, which coincidentally is the area which CC teaches their kids too, which coincidentally is the area where SEAS teaches their kids too, which coincidentally is the BC teaches their girls too, which, coincidentally, is called Columbia University.

So what kind of culture is that? You tell me.

GS students dont get financial aid?

Hi 2018dad,

My name is Orit Dahari, and I am a tour guide for the School of General Studies. I wanted to clarify that all GS students are eligible for the GS scholarship, which is based on a combination of need and merit. This scholarship sticks with the student his or her entire time at Columbia, and tends to increase if they do well in their courses. It is commonly used in conjunction with outside scholarships, federal and state financial aid, and each student receives a tailored financial aid package from the Office of Education Financing upon their admission to GS. You can always email the Office of Financial Aid at gsfinancialaid@columbia.edu to ask specific questions.
