Hi I was admitted into Johns Hopkins and UT Austin. I want to eventually go to a strong grad school and work for a company like Google, Facebook, or small companies. I’m not sure whether to focus more on rankings or not. I know Hopkins is significantly more selective. What do you guys think?
You can get to to companies you listed from either. If you’re in-state (and want to work in TX eventually and don’t get much aid from JHU), I would strongly consider UT-Austin for CS.
That’s easy Hopkins !!!
I would choose Hopkins too.
I think you have to consider your net price. If UTA is cheaper than JHU, then UTA. If JHU is way cheaper, then it is OK to pick JHU. The question is where is the breakpoint. I would pay some premium for UTA, but the amount is a personal question.
What is the net price of both?
COA (cost of attendance) for each school ?
Cost isn’t an issue suprisingly. So don’t weigh that into anything really. I just want the best education possible for career opportunities and grad school.
JHU would be much smaller.
That could be good.
UT Austin has far more strength for CS and would allow you to be exposed to cutting-edge research while there. For CS, they would really blow JHU out of the water in that area. Their industry reputation is top notch and you’ll find grads in all the big companies in pretty good numbers. They are #5 most represented in top Silicon Valley companies in raw numbers, where JHU doesn’t make the list. They’re #8 for new grad hires.

Have you visited either one?
Are you instate for UT? If so did you get into one of the honors programs?
