Should I go to a Junior College 1st to get Georgia Hope then transfer to another school?

What are the Pros and Cons?

Should I go to a Junior College 1st to get Georgia Hope then transfer to another school?

What are the Pros and Cons?

Thank you!

Why a 2-year college? Would you qualify for admission to a four-year school in the University System of Georgia?

In Georgia, if you have a ‘B’ for 30 hours in college, you can get the Hope Scholarship (Pays basically all in state tuition).

I can get in the 4 year, but it is $9,000 a year and he junior is $3,500 a year. In this way, I can go for 2 semesters at $3,500, get hope, and then transfer to a 4 year college.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Just be certain to meet with the transfer counselor at the JC as soon as you can so that you can plan your program there according to the transfer requirements of the place you want to go to.

Good luck!

So, is your goal to save room and board costs for frosh and soph years?

Are you low income? Do you qualify for Pell?

What are your stats (GPA and test scores)? maybe you can afford a GA 4 year public is your stats are high enough. There are some GA publics that give merit scholarships on top of HOPE. And, if you qualify for Pell as well, that could make the difference.

Don’t rule out applying to a couple of instate publics that give merit for your stats.

3.2 GPA (with all classes - not just Core - a 3.0 in Core during high school is required to get Hope OR a 3.0 in 30 hrs of college). 1170 SAT. Not low income but in this economy, that is not saying much.

The goal is to spend very little during the first 30 hrs in order to get hope - then transfer to another school when Hope kicks in.

I welcome all suggestions and thoughts

Please clarify…

Are you saying that you can’t get HOPE your first 2 years? If not, why are you saying that HOPE “kicks in” when you transfer?

Is your 1170 M+CR SAT?

It looks like Georgia St offers some scholarships that would stack onto HOPE.

For Hope,
From Freshman to end of Senior Year, if you have a 3.0 in CORE classes, then you get Hope as a starting freshman.
If you do not have a 3.0 in core, you do NOT get Hope as a freshman - but you can get Hope if you complete 30 hrs of COLLEGE work.

Yes that is M+CR.

So you’re under 3.0 in core classes?

2.9 and would need 4.0 in all classes to bring it up. Possible but not likely.

Well, you should apply to a couple of 4 year instate publics that would be affordable IF you do bring your GPA up to a 3.0.

I am. This is a fallback position because I have never made all straight 4.0 in all classes before.

Did you study for the PSAT like everyone suggested? How do you think you did?

Are you continuing your EC’s, swimming, theatre etc? Are you getting leadership positions in those? Could commuting to Georgia State be an option even if you don’t get Hope as a freshman?

OP, what year are you, junior or senior? If you are still a junior you have time to pull up the Hope GPA.

I’m a senior. I CANNOT pull it up. 4.0 in all classes all year.
