I'm taking COG17 next quarter to fulfill a GE requirement and I was wondering if it was worth it to buy the book. I heard that I could borrow textbooks from the library for 3 hours at a time. Should I do this instead of buying the book, or is the book really, really necessary? Books are so expensive :/

You and everyone else will be trying to rent the book for 3 hrs at at time before midterms. You could rent the book and photo-copy the pages you need after getting the syllabus. Also, look for it used on Amazon.

yeah i if you could get it cheap, buy it and then resale it… at least you wont have to fight over a book like artic said/
you can try slugbooks.com, they compare your school prices as well as other online stores such as ebay and amazon as well as renting sites.

now if you dont mind i have a question [dont mean to hijack the thread but it is sort of related]
are there a lot of copies of textbooks in the library for library use only. like i have a bunch of free time and i figured i could do some catching up on a class. I stroll into the library and would i be able to find text books for my classes or is it limited thus making me drag my books from home to school?

Good point! I didn’t think of what it would be like during finals… Does the library rent out books as well?

Here’s my advice about borrowing books. Personally, I like to annotate my books to help me remember the info/study for the tests. If you are one of those people then i would not recommend renting. However, if you don’t like to annotate/highlight or re-read the book multiple time then you should rent

The number of books on reserves depends, and I think you can check how many are available if you go to libraries.ucsd.edu
My psyc60 class had 2 copies but I’ve heard some classes had as much as 7 copies on reserve, which pretty much meant there were copies available almost all the time I never lug my books around campus because people rarely check out the books until the few days before midterms…

I think UCSD has a booklending program but I haven’t looked deeply into it. I think bookrenter is a store that lets you highlight while renting, but I don’t really know how that works either :(

I’ve borrowed books from the library a few times for my lower division Psych class. It worked decently, but it was a bit of a hassle. Especially in the days before midterms and finals you want to be able to access your book whenever you want to. I think the best course of action is to buy a book online and resell it when the quarter’s over. The price difference won’t be significant.

@justmyview: do you know the best place to sell textbooks?
