Should I list this in the Common App special circumstances section?

My community service (the amount) is passable, and I have "alright" ECs, but a big reason why I wasn't able to do more than what I did is because I often have had to stay home to take care of my toddler brother (now four) all throughout high school. My parents would be unavailable to drive me places (volunteering, club events sometimes) because it would be a hassle to either carry my then-infant brother around or because they had to stay home to watch him.

We have tried to just bring him to events sometimes (I remember during orchestra concerts where I would be able to hear his loud talking or crying from onstage), but it's really pretty inconvenient.

Should I list that as a special circumstance? Sorry if this sounds petty and is in no way a special circumstance...

I think it is reasonable to say that your involvement was limited due to family responsibilities, specifically caring for a younger sibling. I know people who have written this in the past…

Yeah, I think its reasonable. I had a similar situation, I’m just afraid it will look like I’m trying to make excuses.

Yeah that’s what I’m worried about lol xP

An alternative is to ask your GC to address this in the SSR.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I would not use it to make an excuse, but turn it to a positive: your (main EC) were helping the family by caring for your infant sib while your parent had to work.

Absolutely. Taking care of younger siblings is an important responsibility than not everybody in high school has to deal with. It certainly can limit participation in other more traditional extracurricular activities. I agree with bluebayou. Try to turn your experience into a positive rather than making an excuse (although it does not appear from your post that you’re trying to make an excuse).

Yes.
Also a good essay topic

There is an activity category called “family responsibilities.” Make that your main activity.

I think I will do that!

I just have a couple of questions - what should I put for position/leadership and details/honors/accomplishments? o.o Should I actually go into detail?

Thanks again!

150 characters is hardly enough. just list the leadership and key points.
