People keep telling me this is a risky/unstable career to invest my time in. Although I’ve always been interested in petroleum engineering, I can see myself going into Chemical Engineering as well. Stanford has changed to an Energy Resources Engineering major rather than Petroleum Engineering. Does this make the degree more flexible? Could I get a bachelor’s in Petroleum Engineering and a master’s in Chemical Engineering or vice versa?
Help please!
I would contact Stanford and ask them what their intention was in changing to ERE. Stanford’s acceptance rate is so low - be sure to have a range of schools on your list. I suggest majoring in Chem E and take classes/focus internships in petroleum. People are correct that the industriy has ups and downs, but if it is something that you love just try to find a subfield with potential.
