Should I make an astrology joke in my common app essay?

Basically I just want to say: “Like a true Aries, I didn’t take no for an answer - and I wouldn’t let anything or anyone hold me back.”
Is this too informal? I do love astrology, but I’m not sure if admissions officers feel the same way.

I am sure some readers at some schools would find it amusing, and others will simply shrug. What will matter much more is the rest of what you write. If you want to include a discussion about astrology, because you love it, then by all means, do so. But keep the focus on why you love it - and less about what it is, or heaven forbid, do not try to explain why the joke is funny!

And let’s be honest. Even if you got a dozen replies that all told you not to include the joke, you’re a true Aries, you’ll do what you want regardless, and probably include it anyway!

Have fun along the way - this can be a stressful time, but it can be plenty exciting. Best of luck!

Humor is a great icebreaker. If done well it can grab the reader’s attention. If done well. Just make sure the reference is easily recognized without explaining it. If it becomes one of those “you had to be there…” you’ve lost the effect and perhaps the reader.

Tying it in to the topic makes sense.
