Should I minor in Spanish if I major in journalism?

Hello! I am going into my senior year of high school & I am trying to decide what to do in college. I know I am for sure going to major in journalism, but am unsure of my minor. I know I want one, but I am between international relations & spanish. I am going into my sixth year of spanish this year, & I really love the language. I’m taking the spanish AP test May 2019. I don’t want to lose it after high school, & I know having a spanish minor would be beneficial in the future. However, I also love the idea of international relations & traveling after college for my job. Which one would be of more benefit to me with a major in Journalism? Thank you in advance!!!

As a former reporter, I would say a Spanish minor/dual major would be the better of the two choices you mentioned.

Being bilingual is a plus in any field, especially journalism. You would stand out in several areas of the country, and diversity beats including immigration are only going to grow. I have seen some job listings say knowledge of Spanish is required. Plus, you can use it if you land an overseas reporting gig (but those are hard to come by and you normally have to work your way up to them).

International relations, while interesting, is not as beneficial. I say that as a newspaper/political science major

You can travel for your job regardless of what you minor in, so if you want to minor in Spanish, go ahead and minor in Spanish. I agree that being bilingual in Spanish will be beneficial in any field.

Also, you don’t have to decide on your college minor during your senior year of HS
