Should I minor in Theater?

So, i’m senior in high school, and i’ve decided awhile back that i wanted to major in art history. But, right now i’m in a theater productions class. What we basically do is build the sets for the plays the theater department produces, and sometimes theater classes will be in rehearsing while we work on the set.

After being in the class for a few months, and watching them rehearse, I’ve kind of been wanting to act myself. It just looks so amazing watching them go. Although, I’m kind of on the fence about actually taking a class in college for it. These students have been in theater classes their whole high school career and maybe even middle school too. I have no experience with acting whatsoever. I’m worried about going into a theater class in college and being surrounded by students with more experience and talent than me and then I’ll end up making a fool of myself with my zero background experience.

I’m really interested in doing this, but is it a waste? I know its meant to be a class in how to be a better actor, but I just know most people will be in that class already at a high level. Should I at least minor in the class and try, or should i maybe find some other kind of acting class outside of the one offered in college? One that’s for beginners, I mean.

A significant portion of working actors have never taking an acting class in their life. Yet they made a name for themselves working on sets with award-winning icons. High school theater is not Broadway. The only thing that will set some of those students apart from you is that they have had more time to become comfortable with being the center of attention. They aren’t studying theater because they are the best. They are studying because they want to improve just as you do.

Personally, I am a writer. I spend my childhood gaining praise and even winning some awards, but I still get anxiety about sharing my work. All artists and creatives do and we always well. Because presenting ourselves for judgment is a terrifying thing. But if we don’t take chances, how will we ever know what we can become?
