I would enjoy going to University of Alaska Fairbanks, mostly because I would enjoy living in that state and that’s the best college there. I wan’t to get an english or film bachelors and work as a TV writer in California or Canada, but my Dad says it wouldn’t be worth it to go through all of this and that I would miss the family here in KY. Granted, I don’t want to go there unless I get a scholarship, and there ARE some nice colleges in KY, Ohio, and Indiana, but Alaska just sounds like a great fit for my personality! So what do you guys think? Would going to Alaska hurt my chances of getting hired by Cartoon Network or Disney? Does UAF even have good English or Film classes? I don’t know…
Why would it?
Why would it what?
It doesn’t sound like the rest of your family is interested in establishing Alaska residency, so if by move you mean move there before college, I’m not sure how that’s an option.
I’m a UAF alum, and it is a unique place to go to school. I personally loved it there, while many others left after one semester. Its English and Film programs are probably pretty average - no better or worse than you’d find in Kentucky. One of the really good things about UAF is that the classes are small and you get a lot of personalized attention.
I also went to grad school at USC, and though I didn’t have anything to do with the film school, I do know the USC film school always made a big deal about its connections with the industry. UAF doesn’t have those connections. Most others schools won’t have those connections, either.
I’d consider saving up for a working summer in AK before committing to college there, especially as you are out of state and it would cost quite a bit. There are a lot of summer jobs there, from waiting tables to guiding river rafting and mountain climbing and all that vacation oriented stuff, there used to be canning and fishing jobs but I don’t know how hard those are to come by now. You could look around online and see if you can do any of those for a summer.
And then you will have seen the best of Alaska…everyone I know who lives there (my dad used to, so quite a few) get out in winter if possible
@dfbdfb may have a thought or two to share about Alaska’s universities.

You can always move to Alaska after college; you don’t need to use your college years to explore there.
