Hello everyone (AdmissionDaniel in particular). I love Johns Hopkins, and in my essay describing my academic interest I mention that I have taken a course in that subject at a nearby, competitive, university. Should I just say "I took_" Or should I say, "I took _ at COLLEGE B" Thanks in advance for responding.

If I were you, I would just say “I took a course in ____ at a local university,” or something to that effect. Just to be safe.

I think you should definitely say the name. If it holds so prestige, it will give them a much better idea of what kind of work you were doing as opposed to x community college. Unless you live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, chances are there are many “local” universities within driving distance- but not all are at the caliber of the school you took a class at.

the university is Tufts, does that change the equation at all?

It makes me even more sure in my answer! They’re not going to be “jealous” or something that you took a class somewhere else and not Hopkins when you live hundreds of miles away. (And I’m not just saying this; I had to do it on my app too and asked my gc/an adcom about it just in case).

same kind of situation for me…in my essay i mentioned that i took courses at boston u. over the summer and wavered a bit over whether i should mention the school. in the end i decided to name the school since i didn’t see any reason why the admissions officer shouldn’t know.

yeah, besides, if you applied ED…like…I would think they know that even though you researched at _____, your first choice was still JHU.

i would give the same if it is a good university

In response to syc652, unfortunately I did not apply ED, does that change your mind about whether I should use the actual name in my essay?

Agree with above - name the college. My “S” did a summer program @ Brown and referenced this is his essays - both in supplements and main common app where applicable. He also loves Hopkins and we hope the adcoms realize his Brown summer progam as an academic enrichment program and not that he doesn’t wish to go to Hopkins!

P.S. Our college advisor said to name the college also.

how does tufts even compare to us?

Lack of superiority complex could make them superior?

You should have absolutely no worry about naming another college or university in your application. The Admissions Committee understands that other colleges and universities exist, and that actually some of them are sort-of good schools (joke obviously). If a student writes that they attended a summer program at another school, took classes at another school, walked around another school – we don’t care that you name that other school. Well unless it is Duke (once again I am obviously joking).

The only time that naming another school is going to hurt an applicant is if they use their essays to write about how wonderful that other school is … not the smartest thing to do when applying to Johns Hopkins.

And finally it doesn’t matter what kind of a school it is … if you Harvard where not going to look down on it because it is not a prestigious school, but if you write Suffolk Community College we are going to be utterly impressed. (Oh wait, is that right – joke again).

Please don’t take my joking as a remark on your question. It is just in my 10+ years reading applications I have never once paused at a student writing about taking courses at another school and mentioning the name of that school.

Thanks AdmissionsDaniel,
After reading your response I am going to blame the stress of college applications for asking the question in the first place. Submitting application,
