Should I only write an admissions essay on a "topic of my choice?"

I had heard that if you have the option to either write an essay on your own topic or on a given topic, you should use your own topic, as it will be more unique whereas you are more likely to have your essay overlooked if you use the same topic as other people are using. What is your thought on this? Would it be a serious disadvantage to me to write my essays on the topics given in the Common App and specific school's applications?
Thank you!

Bump Anyone?

whichever way you can write the best essay possible. the topic really doesnt matter much imo.

I have heard the opposite. Nobody I know who wrote “topic of your own choice” got in Chicago last year. It will sounds like you have nothing to write about. But note that im Int’l.

You should write a topic that is college admissions appropriate and best demonstrates to colleges who you are. If one of the topics from 1-4 allows you to accomplish this, use it, otherwise go for a topic of your choice. Make sure the topic you choose is appropriate for college admissions. Discuss with your parent, college counselor, and teachers. Good luck!
