A question about "a topic of your choice" option

For the common application, if I choose to write on a topic of my own choice, do I have to write what topic question I am responding to?

the same question goes for Notre Dame's application. They say "Please note the topic you have selected." Do I just write a sentence or two explaining which prompt, of my own creation, I am answering?

I think writing the topic of your choice would be fine. For my essay, I believe I might do that, too.

Do any other people have other opinions?

Being clear about your topic should be good. Just make sure your essay is long enough and personal.

bump Anyone have a definite answer? So is it required that I indicate exactly what topic of my own choice I'm writing about?

Also, what is the maximum length for the common app essays?

Check with the Notre Dame forum for definite answers and check with the other college forums, too.

Same question: For example, the Chicago application asks you to write your own prompt. Is the same expected for the common app?
