I am a third year undergraduate student at NYU who is on the prehealth track and is majoring in Computer Science. This semester I took Discrete Mathematics and received a C+ in the course. I am considering requesting a pass/fail as it is allowed now with classes going online due to covid. I am just unsure whether this is a good idea because I want to apply to medical school and I don’t know how bad that looks. It would definitely help my gpa to P/F the class but I don’t want to reduce my changes of getting into medical school. What should I do?
As a third year student having completed many courses already, getting a C+ in this course will not, by itself, harm your GPA in any meaningful way, or have any impact on your chances to get into med school. If you’re all stressed out over the C+, change course grade to P/F, if allowed, and move on.
Is Discrete Math counted as a Computer Science or a Math course ? By content, it can be classified as a Math course and may be included in BCMP GPA. However, it may not make any significant difference in the final sGPA.
If you already met 2 math classes, you should be ok to go with pass/fail for additional classes in that subject. If you dont have one year of math, then it might be necessary to meet base level requirement.
I would recommend going to pass fail for a C+
Is a B worth changing to pass/fail?
Probably not because then adcomms will assume that the P is covering a grade lower than your current B.
I’d always lean towards transparency. I’d show the B.
I think a Pass in an otherwise Graded course will be considered a C. I think you’d better off try harder to get a B-, it will be much better than a P/F.
I thought that this was going to be a thread about organic chemistry.
