I currently attend a boarding school in the northeast (10th grade) and I want to apply to the United World Colleges for the 11th and 12th grade IB program they offer. The problem is I was too young to complete an application for Fall 2011 (you have to be 16 by September 1st of that fall, my birthday is in Nov.) So I now have to complete my Junior year at my current school which is very prestigious school and has rigorous academics, but is just not a fit. I can either then apply for UWC's and repeat 11th grade or continue on to 12th. What should I do? Opinions, advice, etc...

I of course don’t really know your situation but this doesn’t seem like a very good idea to me. Repeating is fine when transitioning from public to private, but if you’re already at a good school colleges might find it strange to see that you repeated a year, it doesn’t look very good.

If your school isn’t absolutely horrible it’d probably best for you to just finish it. Unless you have some special reason for wanting to go to UWC it’s probably not worth it to go for just a year. By then you only have one year left in high-school anyway.

How about SYA through your current school?

I’m pretty sure if you are doing IB diploma you HAVE to do it for 11th and 12th grade. (you didn’t mention whether your current school is IB or not)

Yes.

Just go to [Browser Not Supported](http://www.uwc-usa.org) and you’ll see that they ONLY accept 11th grade applications.

Colleges will not find it “weird” because the IB is a two-year program and you’re young for your age. A lot of UWCers repeat one or even two years. It’s worth it. Also, as explained on the website, you could graduate from college in three years.

But I don’t know what to do if you’re already doing the IB. Maybe you should call them?
