I am a freshman right now, and am planning on applying to a handful of boarding schools next year. However, I’ve heard getting in for your junior year is incredibly difficult. Would it be better for me to apply as a repeat 10th grader?
Would making a decision like this hurt me in the long run? I’ve already switched schools due to reasons I couldn’t control last semester. If I repeat 10th grade, would I be in trouble? Is it better to just apply for junior year?
You might also look at this year’s stats/results thread and see what results were like for 10th versus 11th. Most schools have more open slots for 10th, but as to the actual proportions, I’m not sure
@vwlizard, honestly, I’m thinking the same thing. Yeah, I’m getting an education at both schools, but it’d be more like… solid for me to repeat a year just to get a grounding.
When I transferred to BS I repeated 10th grade. I was also hesitant at first but it definitely ended up being the right call. I got to spend an extra year at an amazing school, was much less stressed than I would have been coming in as a new 11th grader and got to try a lot of things I wouldn’t have had the time to otherwise. It’s definitely an option worth considering, and if you don’t mind graduating a year later than planned, there’s no real downside to getting an extra year of a great education.
Even huge schools like Phillips Andover have only 10 spots available for 140 female applicants - extremely competitive!. I think it would be better if you choose to repeat 10th.
Hi @CavsFan2003, I have posted on similar threads several times before, as others have indicated. Please do consider repeating the 10th grade. An extra year in BS is not like an extra year in public high school. There are many other “repeaters”, you will have a statistically better chance for admittance, and your senior year can be spent in deeper exploration of some of your favorite subjects. The other aspect, is social. It is a lot easier to transition in as a 10th grader than as an 11th grader. Easier to make friends, join clubs and sports, etc. Even when you get to college, you will feel better prepared. Best of luck with your applications!
Thank you, @CallieMom! I am really considering it. I’m not 100% sure if I’m going to be applying next year, but If I apply I am definitely going to repeat 10th grade.
