Should I retake a 2200?

I took the SAT last march for the first (and thus far only) time and got a pretty decent score: 760 CR, 720 M, 720 W. At first I was pretty delighted with myself, as I had not taken prep classes and and not purchased any books to study/practice with, thereby "beating the system" and not giving industry any more of my money than I was required to.

I had no plans to retake, as I was easily in the top quartile of every school to which I was planning to apply. However, I have very recently shifted my top choice from St. Olaf College to Tufts University, a significantly more competitive school. While I am still in the top quartile (75th percentile exactly, according to Collegeboard), my score may not stand out as much as it otherwise would.

So, my question is, would studying a little bit and taking the exam again significantly help my chances, or do test scores not matter at that point and instead it will hinge on my academics and extracurriculars?

A pertinent question for me. I have been scoring around that range in my practice tests and am confused too.

Can somebody answer.

Sure, take the tests again, as long as you don't feel over-stressed, and are able to manage. You have nothing to lose, and only to gain. Your scores are very good, of course; you are in a great position either way. The rest of your application (ECs, transcript, essays, rec letters, etc.) are very important and will probably be your keys to admission, since your scores right now are fine. The whole thing is balance, and luck. Hang in there, kids!
