I'm asian and applying to some of the top 20 colleges.

what grade are you in??
you probably should…many colleges look at the best scores from each section…

12th grade
thinking of taking it in dec

that’s ridiculous. there’s absolutely no need. well done.

i’m chinese

Haha, I have the EXACT same dilemma as you (Chinese guy who “only” scored a 2230 the first time round).

Anyway, I don’t think it’s worth it. SAT scores arent worth much to the top 20 colleges anyway. It would help a lot more if you wrote a great essay than if you got a 2330 instead of 2230 on your SAT.

I got a 2230, and I did not retake.

You’ll be fine…but if you REALLY REALLY feel like you can get a higher score, then go for it

Hi! Just like many other asian males, I am applying to some of the top universities in our nation.
My scores for the SAT were 800M 690V 660W.
I was wondering if I should study (I haven’t studied for the SAT or taken a prep course yet) and attempt to score higher on the December SAT… My unweighted GPA is 3.6 and my weighted GPA is 4.3. I had extenuating circumstances in junior year, which explains my low unweighted GPA.
My extracurriculars and reccomendations are amazing, I hope.
My hook: I’m an international hip hop dance champion.

What do you think? Should I study and retake the SAT?

this is a ridiculous question…of course not. you know it, and just wanted people to marvel at your amazing scores.

No, I’m really being serious because I don’t know whether 100-200 points in my SAT score will make a difference when elite universities’ adcoms are considering the fact that I got 2 C’s and an F (but made up with an A) second semester of junior year … especially when more than half of their applicants have literally FLAWLESS grades.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am a senior and that December is the last chance I have to take the SAT Reasoning since I am taking the SATII’s in November.

Unfortunately, this is the indecision that strikes many asians who do well on the SAT.

“Master,” you undeniably did fine on the SAT. What bothers me is that you believe you need to retake this exam just because you’re “asian.” I’m not going to argue, it’s not uncommon for an asian person to score nearly perfect, so I understand your anxiety.

I am chinese, too, and I’m applying to a lot of top 20 schools, as well. Though some CCers may beg to differ, I believe I’ve scored a respectable 2120. Am I retaking this exam? Yes, and for the third time, because my verbal score is generally sub-par (660) for the schools i’m applying to. however, your scores are comfortably in the middle 50% of the elite, and that’s when colleges weigh personal qualities well over mere numbers courtesy of college board.

bottom line is, at this point, your standardized test scores aren’t going to make a difference. in the end, it’s what your personality brings to the plate that’s going to make or break the deal. Invest the time that you would’ve used to study for the Dec SAT in your essays instead. just enjoy, the period when you’re waiting to hear from dream schools is the real time to get worked up.

Dude, if you don’t get above a 2230, you’re screwed for life. You’ll probably end up a crackhead on the street somewhere… You should just die right now.

^lol, those posts are getting kind of old…

u really should, u have a 2230 only so basically ur screwed, lol

Hahaha. I understand what you mean… I’m the type of person who would never be happy until I truly got a solid 750-760 on every section. IF you can get a 2300+, then go for it. If not, it makes no difference.

DO NOT RETAKE this excellent score. If you go down it will look bad. Do not assume your score will go up. The statistics do not favor people in your score range retaking. Check the stats on collegeboard site.

also this is your first time taking it and you got a 2230. remember that just as scores can go up they can also go down. colleges will be a lot more impressed with a 2230 that you scored the first time round than a 2100 you scored the second time BUT superscoring it makes it 2300. how sure are you that they will actually superscore it. they are going to be looking at 40,000 applications and you think 100 points on your SAT is going to change an admission decision?

It’s not all about SAT scores. I have 2 friends who both applied to harvard. one had a 2400 sat and the other barely passed 2000. The 2400 was rejected cos his essays didn’t show his personality and his hook was average. the 2000 got in because his essays were GREAT and his hook was he was a very very good cello player…
moral of the story? SAT isn’t everything.

My advice is you should be happy with your scores, and be happy that you don’t have to think about the SAT anymore..focus on your SAT IIs and r.e.l.a.x…you’re going to college and graduating! don’t take life for granted!

But if you still wanna retake, that’s your choice. All i can say is taht greed is playing a role in this picture..and colleges are gonna see your retake and they might even wonder why you retook the test in the first place…colleges want D.I.V.E.R.S.I.T.Y not greedy freaks of nature who do nothing but retake SATs.

NOrmal ppl would be happy with those scores..
BTW i’m an international asian and those two friends i mentioned were ALSO both asian. YOu should be glad you’re applying as an asian. Out of the 20,000 americans applying, you’re one asian with life experiences that no american can ever come to think of (like i’m from myanmar, that’s a great hook in itself rite there) and push to talk about your culture more than your grades. Your culture is the one thing americans can never overtake you in…SAT scores EVERYONE can overtake you in it. But if you’re trying to conform…that shows the colleges that you’re not really as interesting a person as they thought you were.

All my asian friends with mediocre grades and SAT scores of 1900 (i went to an international school) all pushed forward in their essays and short answers how their culture is diff and their background is diff and they love being asian but have to subject themselves to racism…all these friends are attending the top 20 unis in the US rite now.
