Should I retake Calc or does it not matter?

Hi everyone,
So when I was a freshmen and sophmore in high school I took AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC, which covered the three Calc classes you would take in college and I also signed up for the Dual Credit for those three classes through Portland State University. However, during those two years I became very ill and so I was absent all the time and I was also hospitalized and I ended up receiving C’s in those classes, and this C’s on my PSU transcript.
Now I’m entering into Oregon State University this fall, and I have a couple options:

  1. I could try to erase the C’s from my transcript ( i can petition for it) and then retake them all at OSU
  2. I could keep the C’s on my transcript but still retake the classes
  3. Or I can keep the C’s and move on to Linear Algebra

What do you think is best? I just don’t want the C’s to hurt my chances of getting into medical school but I also don’t want to have to take calculus again… I did take an online college class after those two years and I did really well, so I know the material I was just absent so much that I couldn’t do well, however this online class isn’t something I can put on a college transcript.
Please help me!
Thank you

According to AMCAS rules, even if you “erase” those Cs from your college transcript by retaking the classes, those grades will still be included in your GPA calculations when you go to apply to allopathic (MD) medical school programs. (Osteopathic [DO] programs only count the most recent grade when computing GPA. You still have send transcripts for all classes you’ve ever taken though.)

Also when reporting grades to AMCAS and AACOMAS, you must send transcripts from every college level course you’ve ever taken–including all dual enrollment courses and online college classes.

So no matter what you do, those Cs are not going away. (For MD programs anyway…). The decision on whether to repeat Calc 1 & 2 or move onto Calc 3 (you need to take Calc 3 before Linear Algebra at most colleges) is really up to you.

What’s your major?

Are advanced math classes required for major by your college?

What is your purpose in taking advanced math classes?

Medical schools do not require Calc beyond Calc 1. It would much more beneficial for you to take stats or biostats instead of linear algebra. OHSU “strong recommends” (read: requires) one stats class for admission.

Statistics is also a topic tested on the MCAT.

If you think you may want to skip ahead to Calc 3, then I’d strongly recommend that you google around to find an old copy of the final to Calc 2 at OSU and take it (honestly, without using notes/texts/online sources/programmable calculator to help you). If you score in the A range on the exam, then you should be good to move onto the next level of math.

The best case scenario is definitely getting an A in linear algebra.
