So today I got an 1870 in my SAT I. I am wondering if I should do SAT Subject Tests in January or if I should retake the SAT.
I got 680 in the Chem and Bio tests, and a 600 in the Math 1. I am applying to some highly selective schools. I have been tutoring myself because I could not afford a tutor or SAT classes and I indicated this on the common app. Also, two prominent individuals in my life has passed away in the last year and I am still coming to terms with it so I have been stressed out. One occured on the morning of my subject tests exams. So should I redo the SAT or do the SAT subject tests. I am applying to a few Ivy Leagues.

Retake SAT I imo. 1870 is not great, and the SAT 1 is still more valued than the subject tests.

I know this one person who got accepted into an IVY with 1800s SAT. Her rest of the application stand out I guess.
Check…

“I have been tutoring myself because I could not afford a tutor or SAT classes and I indicated this on the common app.” im sorry, but this seems like SUCH an excuse. I couldn’t afford SAT classes, tbh most people can’t, especially internationals (I think you are based on other posts?) because help is less available so companies think they can charge more etc. It’s no excuse for doing badly sorry. Don’t mention it on the common app.

Retake the SAT, but do realize your scores are far below the norm for ivies. Unless you can raise your score 350 points, maybe look for schools that are more matched to you.

Also, I agree with elaras. Don’t make excuses for stuff. If you want to, you can work stuff into your essays, especially about familial deaths, but do it tactfully.

Yeah I can. I’m going to properly apply myself this time. @wrywry

@elaras, actually no. 95% of students in my country take classes for 6 months prior to the exam. Our exam system is structured different so it takes some getting used to. So I wasn’t making excuses for myself, I just explained that my true academic and intellectual potential was not reflected in the test marks.

@ivyleague19919 if u scored an 1870 ur first time then you could get it up to 2100+ with extensive study

@ivyleague19919 what country is this

Don’t want to give out too much details but we’re an oil country and most students who take the SAT’s are either athletes with full scholarships or wealthy. Classes are about $500US for six mths. @elaras

And thanks a lot for the encouragement @thegrant

No offense dude but your scores are way below Ivy Level like not even 25th percentile

@ivyleague19919 i did 3-5 hours on average a day for about 3 months to increase my score 360 points (1700 to 2060). The January SAT is in like 30 days, so you got time!!
