I will be retaking the ACT in April but I am unsure if I should retake the essay. I got a 8/12 on the writing section. Also will schools such as University of Miami still be able to superscore my ACT if I took one with the essay and another without the essay? Please let me know if you think I should retake, any advice would be greatly appreciated. (As of now I don’t think any of my schools require the essay but I still did it since my list is obviously not finalized)

Some unis only take the scores with writing, if you are retaking, take the one with writing to keep your options open. 8/12 means you can knock out a fine score again.
So take the April one with writing again? @Sybylla
If you were my kid and had a mix of uni applications, sure, if you were my kid and had only a target school where writing didn’t matter, I would let you choose. The unis just vary.
Take it as much as you can.
