Should I scrap my common app essay?

I chose the topic "choose a person that has had an influence on you and describe that influence"

Is anyone willing to read it?

I've changed it so much this weekend that I'm sick of reading it, yet I feel as if it's gotten worse.

I spend so much time describing the person (trust me, the person I chose is sort of unique and requires a lot of explaining) that I feel like I don't tell enough about myself.

I’d say yes, change it. The topic is inherently bad–it doesn’t let you get personal or introspective enough. Colleges care about you, not that person.

Actually, I’d say write an essay on whatever topic you want instead of trying to squish yourself into a single (badly-designed) question. Then, when submitting, pick “Topic of your choice” or whatever question your essay happens to fit best.

I’ll read it for you.
