Should I send a supplementary recommendation?

Someone who is an alumni of ND has offered to write me a recommendation letter. It says on their site that you shouldnt send any extra teacher recs, but does this apply to other people as well? It is my oncologist that has offered to do this. Should I take up his offer?

When we visited ND the admissions counselor stressed not sending extra recs that restate what they already know about you, but I would think a letter from your alumni oncologist might cover areas not mentioned in academic recommendations. It can't hurt!

I have to disagree. I have personally met many of the admissions counselors, and they emphasized that they really don't want people sending extra letters. You are much better off making sure that your teacher letters are good. If you have overcome an obstacle like cancer though, hopefully you worked this into your essay or the teacher mentioned it.

If you want a second opinion, I recommend emailing an admissions rep.

I had a very well know alumn call the admission office to inquire about sending a supplement rec for me and they please don't send any more than required. It won't help.

KH, please read the PM I sent on this topic. The PM messages can be accessed by clicking the Private Messages line (in blue) in the upper right hand corner of your screen. You have to be logged in to get them.

I actually sent in 2 supplemental recommendations and was accepted EA...My GC accidentally sent them out when I really just wanted them to go to my other EA schools...I don't think it will hurt you, but I'm not sure if it will help you either.

yeah i thought it only called for one teacher rec but i sent two and was accepted EA so it can't be THAT hurtful

if you really think it could enhance your app without being superfluous then I say go for it
