Should I send SAT scores to colleges as a junior?

So I recently got my January SAT scores back and I got a 2240. I'm taking the test again in May hoping to raise the 720 I got in math. The collegeboard site is giving me the option of sending my scores to colleges, and I'm not sure what exactly the purpose of that is. Is it just to let certain colleges know that you're interested in them / are a good potential candidate? And should I do this now or wait until I get my scores from the May one and then send both of them? What do people usually do with this option?

If you are taking the test again, you may include the schools you may apply in the free score report request as it will include all previous scores. My D submitted scores to most schools she applied during her junior year as she took her last test (which was SAT2) in June of junior year. If you are going to pay for a score report, you should wait till everything settled.
