Right now i am a sophomore in college majoring in finance and looking to get into the IB field and am looking hard at internships for summer 2011. Would i be in trouble if summer 2011 comes and goes and i have not had an internship yet going into my junior year?

absoutely not. That said, if you are attending a non-target, it would definitely help to land an internship, especially something relevant[/url”>http://www.bankonbanking.com/2010/03/15/no-summer-analyst-ib-offer-–-is-life-over/"]relevant prior to your junior year just to add some weight to your resume and take some of the focus off of your school.

IBanker

Do NOT study for the CFA your sophomore summer. Wow, terrible advice. For investment banking? No. Non-paying internship in something business related, economics/finance research with a professor, travel the world… so many better options.

BankonBanking’s advice is spot on. You should not panic since your school, your networking skills, and the rest of your resume also matter quite a bit. However, having some IB/IB-related work experience, no matter from where, will give you a huge advantage over other candidates. Also, disregard KevinNYC’s comment about the CFA and markets (unless it’s deal book).
