Should I stay at CC one more year?

I will have 73 units done by spring 2013.
I usually took a lot of Political Science courses because I thought I wanted to major in that field, but I recently changed my major to international/global studies & international business which seems to be similar but has different pre-reqs.
I applied to UCs and CSUs but I just got rejected from CSULB and I am devastated.
Haven't heard back from other schools but I am still hopeless.
I had a GPA of 3.02 and I know it's low and I'm pretty sure none of the UCs will accept me :(
I've been spending 3 years in CC, part-time and working full-time.

What worries me is that some people are saying it's not worth to stay another year because colleges will definitely hesitate to admit anyone that has stayed in a CC too long. I'm taking 16 units currently for Spring 2013 and if I am staying one more year, I'm planning to study as a full-time student. Also, I didn't finish the major requirements for global studies to UCSB/UCSD/UCLA so I'm wondering if I should stay and finish those requirements and then apply again next November. Should I stay one more year, finish requirements and hope for the best next year or should I just move on if I get accepted to a college (CSUs or other) this year?

Please HELP! :(

Why the change of major? Check out this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/902677-political-science-vs-international-relations.html</a>. Seems like people think political science is the way to go for undergrad. You’re more likely to get in if you already have the pre-req’s, that is one major criteria for UCLA and UCB acceptance. Although it is probably too late for this, it might be something to consider if you decide to apply next year.

You mentioned that colleges will hesitate to admit someone that’s been in a CC too long, but that is a myth. They usually don’t care, but some do care if you have an excessive amount of units (some set unit caps). I can’t remember specifically which UC though. You’d have to look this up.

Don’t lose hope yet. CSULB is competitive especially for out of area applicants (not sure if you are considered local or not, I think only a couple of CC’s are.) I’ve heard of people getting into UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz with your GPA. I can’t see you getting accepted to the UC’s you mentioned based on your GPA alone, but I wouldn’t recommend waiting another year.

I would wait it out this semester, and see where you get accepted. I have heard of some transfers getting into UC Davis through the wait list. If you decide to remain on a wait-list, you must have a back up plan: SIR to another school while wait-listed.
Keep in mind if you plan to go to grad school it does not matter where you go for undergrad. They want to see good GPA and test scores.

If you don’t want to do this I would suggest reapplying for polisci next year since you already have the classes.

Good luck! I’m also applying with a similar GPA except this is my 4th year. (Changed my major late and got wait-listed for classes…)

I think all those UC’s are a long shot with your GPA. What CSUs did you apply for?

Thanks for the reply guys! I really appreciate it.
I just got accepted to Cal Poly SLO for business administration.

@AsTram: I’m still waiting for CSUF, SDSU, and the UCs :frowning: I need to send in transcripts for CSUF.

For the UCs I actually applied some of them like UCSB for political science instead of insternational relations and put global studies as a alternate choice. I honestly am glad that SLO accepted me because I feel like I have a great back-up if none of the UCs work out for me.

@cmccl91: I decided to change the major because I hated political science classes. I took 3 pol sci class, which are the min. requirements for the UCs. I still needed one more but I just hated the classes and therefore, just changed it to international business/global studies/international relations. I wanted to do something international since I was a child and I believe I was very short-sighted and just went for pol sci without looking at other options.

Oh nice SLO accepted you. What is your major? My GPA is similar to yours and I will apply to the same places.

@AsTran: I was all over the place for majors. For CSUs and Cal Poly: Business Admin/International Business. UCs: Global/International Studies and Pol Sc. Just got accepted to Pomona too! I have tons of work experience tho as an accountant. Maybe that helped me a little? Im not sure. Im surprised to see a lot of other ppl getting in with 3.5 and above and Im like way below that… LOL.

That’s really good to hear and brings a relief when I apply. I thought SLO would be a reach for business major specifically in accounting. I’m hoping to get approved for either cal poly or csuf. Will apply for fall 2014 so I hope the admission rate doesn’t change too much for next year. Congrats on your approvals for now. SLO is definitely a good backup to go too.

Congrats on the acceptances so far. That gives me some hope that you got into good schools since I won’t hear from most that I applied to for another month.

@cmccl

Dont give up hope! :)

I think as long as you are progressively increasing in class difficulty 3 years in CC will not hurt your chances. People work part/full time and cant take 16-20 credits per semester. 16-20 credits per semester is what is required to get an AA in 2 years. I wouldn’t worry about the 3 years in CC.

Im currently in my 3rd consecutive year in CC. I completely switched majors after my first year, transferred to a new CC. My course difficulty has increased through the years and I just received admittance to UofMN-TC for engineering.

Sounds like you are off to a great start with receiving those admittance letters! Best of luck!
