I'm going to be a sophomore at UVa (Or Second Year for UVa People). The first year of college, academically, did not turn out as well as it should, I ended up with a 3.11 GPA after doing research and overloading. I was involved in student government last year, but I'm not going to return next year, too much politics were played, too little things were done for the student body. Overall, I have never felt 100% happy here. Of course there are times when I'm glad I'm here at UVa, but more often than not, I found myself wondering if I should try to transfer out of here.

What are some factors to consider before making such a decision? Also, now that student government is out of the picture, what are some other opportunities I can get to be a "leader" at school?

Thank you all!

I suppose if I were you, I would consider a pretty vital question: is there a school at the caliber of UVa that would accept me with a 3.11 GPA? If you are genuinely unhappy, I don’t really have a right to say you should be concerned about the name-brand of your school, but it is something I would consider because I haven’t come across many Top 40 schools that accept transfers with below a 3.5.

This next year, I recommend trying to make the most of it all. Establish yourself as a leader by founding a club that matters to you or reinvigorating a club that hasn’t been very stable in the past. Seek out professors that can help you make valuable connections in your field. UVa is a big school; try meeting new people that you wouldn’t usually hang out around.

If you’re still unhappy at the end of the semester, then start preparing yourself for a transfer with a handful of schools at which you can see yourself fitting in (reaches, matches and safeties).

Good luck! :)

thank you so much! really appreciate your comment! I know my GPA is really really bad to even consider transfer, hopefully that will change for the better. Thank you again!
