Next year I will be a senior and will take AP Calc AB and BC, AP Language, and AP Chem. I am pretty decent at math (got 610 on SAT) and A's in every math class I have taken. I wanted to challenge myself and take AP chem, especially since I am considering pursuing a medical career. My question is, should I take this class or switch out? People keep warning me about how hard it is, and saying the teacher is terrible! However, I switched out of AP Bio last year because of a bad teacher situation as well, so I don't want to do that again. Will I be able to learn this subject by myself?

I had a below-average teacher for AP Chem last year, but I think I did well in the class and AP test. It’s possible to self-study, but make sure to get a decent textbook because review books won’t cover all the material.

A little late, I know- but how well did you do on chem I, if your school has it?

Also, do you like chemistry so much that you’ll motivate yourself? At my school last year, our small amount of chem students (~30) were split into two smaller classes. Luckily, I ended up with the better teacher. Although he mainly didn’t teach, HE REALLY KNEW HIS STUFF. As proof, he was able to go to an AP workshop and score a 5 on the chem test, easy. I still did a lot of self-studying.

The other teacher DID NOTHING. He didn’t even score his labs. “Oh, you turned it in. 100!” One of my friends was in that class, but he had an intense passion for chemistry.

We both self- studied. We both LOVED chemistry. We both got 5s.
