So I’ve been playing piano for about 6 years now and I was wondering if it would be worth it to send in a couple songs as a music supplement. They would be performance pieces and not compositions. I feel like it would add depth to my app so that’s why I’m considering it. Is it worth submitting if I have the time but don’t intend to do anything with it career wise?
How seriously do you play the piano? Did you compete in any competitions? I think it depends on what school you’re submitting it to, but in general, you would have to be near concert level for your supplement to make a difference. Personally, I’ve played the violin for quite a long time, but I’m not submitting anything because I don’t think it would make a very big impact.
@BlingBlingBling cool I was thinking along the same lines as you. I don’t play exceptionally well or anything and I wouldn’t be playing anything too hard for the supplement (nothing harder that the first movement of Moonlight Sonata).
I am planning on Econ major but will be sending music supplements wherever possible!
One of mine sent a music supp and was not planning a music major. But music and various groups, incl audition-based, were a large part of her life and she intended to (and did) continue playing on campus. She was good enough to show them how she could keep up with other experienced players.
I’m not sure it’s the same if all you’ve done is take lessons and practice, can’t show you used this skill beyond that. But for where (I think) you’re aiming, they would like to believe you will participate in the formal college groups, accompany, etc. But whether or not they even send it to a music prof to listen to, will depend on how compelling the rest of your app is.
If you send anything it really should be of outstanding quality. I would not send if I were you. My D is a very fine violinist and did not even consider sending a music supplement – it was enough to say on her application that she was in the school orchestra etc. She did not major in music but took a couple of music courses out of interest and played in her college orchestra for all 4 years. I’d put the piano down as an EC and leave it at that.
