I’m in my second year of college and I was going to pursue an English degree. But I’m having second thoughts because I need to find a job after I graduate. Do you think it’s difficult to find a decent job with an English degree? My original plan was to do a few internships and with that I could find a career path. But I thought about changing it to Accounting because I heard that it was easier for people to find a job after they graduated. What do you think?
I’ve heard that its easy to find an accounting job right after college so ya. I don’t know about jobs with an English degree though. Wait… there actually are pretty neat job openings in Asia where they are looking for English “teachers”.
Please switch major to Accounting. As far as I’ve read, it is one of the most stable careers out there. English would only lead to the trauma of attempting to earn another degree.
Accounting “can” be very stable, in regards to with a CPA, some public accounting, and/or big 4 experience, you will almost always be able to find some job. No matter how bad the economy gets! It is arguably one of the best fields in regards to job security.
With all that being said, without being a CPA and big 4 experience. It’s slightly above average in regards to job security but a lot more secure than an english degree. Furthermore, be aware that the CPA exam is considered to be one of the more difficult professional exams so it’s not a guarantee you’ll even pass it.
Additionally, really take the time to make this decision because if you don’t have a passion for accounting, it will be a miserable future for you. I mean early on there isn’t a lot of diversity in the work you’re going to get to do and when job responsibilities do start to become more varied, it’ll just be more finance, economics, and management.
I personally am doing an accounting degree and really enjoy it but some of my friends who are marketing, sales, and management majors tell me their accounting classes are one of their worst experiences. Furthermore, just imagining switching to English just sounds dreadful to me (the classes themselves) so I would think it’d be the same for you switching to Accounting.
Ultimately, job security is definitely important but shouldn’t be the only thing you choose a major on.
Have you taken any accounting classes? If you don’t really like it (and lots of people don’t), you would be utterly miserable in it as a career. I am someone who took a few classes in it, and just can’t imagine being an accountant for my whole career even though I got good grades in it. There are other areas of business (marketing, management information systems, for example) that might be interesting to you. Certainly it is helpful to think about supplementing your English major with some other skills like business courses or something like statistics. But don’t just pick accounting to get a job.
Management Information Systems isn’t safe, unemployment by BLS for that has skyrocketed. It probably won’t go down due to the popularity of “Tech” majors.
