I'm a sophomore at U of Iowa and I'm currently a pre-business major, and I'm supposed to apply to the college of business next semester. However, the only business classes I've taken are microecon, macroecon, and financial accounting, and I didn't like any of them except micro a little bit. I've also taken stats for bus. and bus. calc, and I really liked stats and didn't mind calc. I was thinking of changing my major to statistics, but I'm nervous because I've only taken bus. stats/calc and don't know if they were too easy compared to the real ones to say I actually enjoy stats/calc. And taking calc through calc III seems scary, and I don't know what I'd do with a stats major. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Firstly, how is your general math ability? That should give you some indicator of how you’d cope.

You also need to speak to your college advisor a.s.a.p. Maybe you change your major after entry to the college of business?

I don’t feel you know enough at this point to be able to choose stats over any other major so I won’t recommend it. Have you enjoyed any other classes you’ve taken? Even ones that you might think won’t lead to a good job?

My friend is a biostatistician. She works for a cancer trials unit at a major university. She basically did a post-bac/ masters for non-math majors but always found math easy.

You can do any of the ‘normal’ graduate jobs with a stats major- teaching, college teaching, local and federal government, law enforcement, military or go to grad school and become a doctor, lawyer, dentist, veterinary, social worker etc. Your major need never tie you down. You could also do plenty of interesting jobs that don’t require a college degree.

Using your stats major specifically, you could work in healthcare, research, government, sports, gambling, consumer opinion, politics etc.

But get that appointment booked right now!
