Hello, I am currently taking physics Honors. I already took biology and chemistry and when we signed up for senior classes, our counselor told us we dont have to take a 4th science. The only sciences left are AP physics ( Which I really dont want to go through again) , AP biology and Geoscience Honors ( easier science) . I plan on majoring in the business field so would a science look good for college admissions or should i just take an elective instead which most of the people are doing. Thank you
Most colleges require or recommend four years of science, so take one.
Should i take Geoscience which is the easiest one?
How do you feel about taking AP Bio?
I really dont want to take that class honestly. I probably wont even take the AP test for that class if I took it
What type of schools are you looking at?
I had this same problem! I’m in Adv. Physics (AP Phys 1) and I just hate science. I want to major in business at UIUC (my flagship). I talked to my counselor, because I would either be taking 2 AP histories or 1 AP history and 1 regular science. My college counselor said that because I took a class that has AP distinction, it would be better than taking a regular science. If I took something like basket weaving (which my school doesn’t offer, btw), in place of my science, then it would not look good to colleges. She also said that she thought that my grade in said AP history would be higher, because I like history much more than science.
My schedule for next year:
AP Stats
Choir
PE
Advanced Composition/College Lit (both 1sem)
Religion IV (Catholic school)
Lunch
AP Gov
AP Econ (Micro and Macro)
Music Theory
If i dont take a 4th science , my classes would be
College English
Algebra 2 H
AP GOV
Web design (2 periods)
AP psychology
Business and marketing 1
Lunch aide Cafeteria
If i took a science ,I would replace it with business and marketing but im not sure I want to do that.
I would like a science since it would be honors. My schools senior classes dont have that much honors which is weird since im in a tech school
Take the fourth science instead of the lunch aide
@fl0984: Geoscience Honors is fine. You do have to take a 4th science, but it doesn’t need to be an AP. In addition, you’d need an extra year of a foreign language.
Lunch aide is really pointless, don’t take that.
Business and Marketing aren’t academic classes and you’re better off taking them in college rather than in high school, when they’ve got serious content. However, since you’re probably not aiming for a selective flagship, you should be okay even if you keep these two classes - unlike 4th year science OR foreign language vs. Lunch Aide.
@musiclover131: are the two “AP history” actually AP Gov and AP Econ? They’re frequently coupled indeed, and they’re fine together, but… that schedule screams “Humanities/Social Sciences”, not “future Business major”. Is PE a requirement? Have you taken Precalculus already and are you ready for Calculus? AP Stats is fine if you’re going to go into Humanities/Social Sciences, but for business you must have had precalc, and calculus is recommended. You’re missing a foreign language, which would be useful in both cases (Humanities/social science, or business).
Also, run the NPC on UIUC, because Illinois has a high-cost university system with very little financial aid, so that many Illinois students find that OOS universities with merit aid (UAlabama, Miami Ohio, Ohio U, UMinnesota, Iowa State) as well as private universities are a better deal financially. If you apply to UIUC, you’ll need quite a few financial safeties and matches.
Im going to take Geoscience Honors even though i hate science. I will just wait for business in college.
The business and marketing class is an elective but ima just keep it at 2 electives. I already took 2 foreign languages. I took spanish 1 for spanish speakers sophomore year and this year is skipped spanish 2 ad went straight to AP spanish language and culture. Spanish is the only foreign language my school offers. The only AP elective is AP psychology which im taking next year. I wil just have to take geoscience just so colleges see that I have that 4th math even though its not required but it is better to take 4 core classes instead of 3.
You’re good for Foreign Language, AP Spanish is great :). And Geoscience should be less theoretical and more fun than Physics, it should even include field rips (check with your science teacher ).
Thanks Yeah i will do that as my schedule try to challenge myself my senior year too. Do you also know when it is a good time to start applying to colleges? Thank you
Are you the first in your family who’ll be going to a 4-year college? Because there are organizations that can help you for free (beside this online community, of course :p)
Some apps will be up in July, mostly public universities. CommonApp goes live August 1st but you can look at the prompts right now and start working on your main essay (you should be able to reuse the essay at most universities with few tweaks - and when the essay is “optional”, ALWAYS paste it in ).
For now, you should borrow the Fiske Guide, Colleges that Change Lives, Insider’s Guide to the colleges, and The Princeton Review’s Best Colleges. Start with reading about ALL the colleges in your state. Then refer to the indications in the margins for something like “If you like this college you may also like …, …, …”
Something you can do today is run the NPC on your instate public universities, from reaches to matches to safeties. Add a couple private colleges, too.
Bring the results to your parents and discuss the results together: what can they afford from income and savings? do they have a range in mind wrt costs? Are all the universities’ results affordable? Only some?
Thank you! i would look into many colleges
