Hi I'm an international high school student in the U.S.
My school does not require me to take spanish or french in order to graduate.
I am planning to go to a university in the U.S.
Should I take a foreign language class?
I am willing to if the universities like to see it on my transcript.
Or does it not matter? ( I want to major in chemistry or chemical engineering)
Thanks

What grade are you in now? If you are a Junior or Senior, it probably will not help you very much to only take one or two years of a foreign language. You’ll have to look at the specific admission requirements at desired universities about the units recommended/required in High School to see if they require foreign languages.

Being fluent/able to function in a foreign language is a great skill and colleges like to see that. It probably won’t make up for a less-than-ideal GPA or ACT/SAT score, but its just one of those things to show how you are a more “worldly” person, so to speak. It’s also an important thing to do, in my opinion. Knowing another language will let you explore that culture and speak with its people.

While I am in French right now, Spanish is a helpful language since there are so many Mexican immigrants, so its very applicable. It may help more in terms of future careers, as an engineering firm that may work in the south around the border or in any area where there is a high density of Spanish speakers, would love to see an applicant that can speak Spanish.

It depends on the university, obviously, but many universities will require or “recommend” 2+ years of a foreign language on your transcript.

Some colleges and universities will accept your ESOL credits as foreign language credits. So ask.
