My school only offers Chinese, French, and Spanish and I have absolutely no interest in them. I have been taking spanish from freshman year to Junior year and I want to replace Spanish with a science and when I go to college, instead of taking spanish I want to take Latin to help me on my pre-med track. Would it be looked down upon if I take 2 sciences instead of a language?
Since you’ve already taken three years of a language and you want to go the pre-med route you won’t be looked down up if you take two sciences. If anything it’ll show more interest in the STEM/pre-med field
Look for the requirement or recommendation of each school you are going to apply. There is no general answer to it.
Agree with the above. If you are looking at competitive colleges that recommend or require 4 years of foreign language then I suggest you continue with foreign language as most applicants will have done so.
I can’t really give a definite answer because for me, I’m a health science major and I got into my school with two years of Spanish.
It might be different for where you want to go, so go check out the admissions requirements, see where you stand, and plan accordingly. Personally, I’d just do the three years of language and do two sciences senior year.
Agree that it depends where you’re going and what you’re majoring in. Our S took 3 years of Mandarin and SR year took no languages so he’d have room for the 5 APs and marching band instead. He got into the competitive private Us he wanted in engineering with nice merit awards, so lack of language didn’t harm him.
It depends. Does the biggest reach on your list require four years of language? If so, and if you really want to go to that school, take the fourth year. Colleges will look at your 12th grade schedule and they won’t be happy if they see you coast, but that’s not what you’d be doing. Honestly, I think you’re fine dropping the fourth year of Spanish for a second science.
What level of Spanish have you completed?
What sciences have you completed, and which do you want to take?
Be aware that some practicing physicians will find knowledge of common non-English languages useful in the medical practices.
I will be in Spanish 4 Honors in senior year but I want to switch it for an AP science class that I actually enjoy.
