Should I take a language senior year? ASL or Chinese

I have taken 3 years of Chinese but because of a few issues I may not be able to take 4AP next year and really wasn’t planning on it. I would like to take ASL but my (and my parents) concern is time. My planned schedule is AP Bio, AP Enviro, AP Calculus, AP English 12, AP Gov/Econ, band and marching band. I am also in the cabinet of two clubs (incl. president of one). I am on the planning committee for the local 2015 relay for life and I work around 25 hours a week as a cashier/ customer service worker. I do karate as well and also hope to get some amount of sleep. What should i do?

It depends on the colleges that you plan on applying to. Based on the information that I know, colleges like Yale and Harvard require four years of a language. If you do not plan on applying to colleges that require four years of a foreign language (and since you have already completed three years of foreign language, what the majority of colleges look for), then I don’t see the problem with taking something else. It just depends on how you believe you can handle your workload, since 5 APs senior year is quite a lot. However, we’re all different, and I bet you can handle that much of a workload unlike myself. But if you would like to get a decent amount of sleep for the school year, especially with your extracurricular activities and your college applications in the beginning of first semester, I would probably suggest bringing down the amount of APs in order to keep your grades from falling (if that may be the case) or to simply get enough sleep. Hope that helps.

Take ASL at a local CC! I got extremely lucky because I got wait listed. Someone dropped out and now I’m in! I think this will help with your time situation since it’s during summer and it’s only 3 hours long.

If you don’t have time to apply at a CC this summer then I suggest to go for it. I believe that you should challenge yourself, especially during senior year. You’re in the same boat as me, regarding clubs/sports/and APs. I am BEYOND scared for next year and I don’t think I’ll survive. But high school is the best way to push yourself and see where your limits are. Teachers will be more forgiving and everyone will be there to help (as long as you work hard).

But if your work, clubs, and sports are much more important than your classes, then don’t push yourself for that extra AP class.

Anyways, I really think you should push and challenge yourself! You might need to lessen your hours at work or spend more time reading than preparing your club.

You don’t need to take ASL for one year. College Admissions isn’t like a"jump through hoops" process. If you have a legitimate reason to be taking ASL, such as volunteering at an afterschool center where there are many deaf or hearing disabled kids, or if your best friend is disabled then yes, of course; but one year of a foreign language just for the sake of ticking one more box makes no sense.
When colleges say “4 years” they don’t mean “4 units” but rather level reached, ie., Level 4. Level 3 is the minimum level for selective colleges. You have it. Adding ASL won’t help because it won’t add a level to the language you’ve already studied. Take the SAT Subject Test to demonstrate proficiency (or not).
Your schedule is already very challenging as it is. While reaching Level 4 is better, if you can’t, you can’t - just make sure that your GC indicates that scheduling conflicts prevented you from taking a 4th year of Chinese.

My interest in ASL is simply due to interest in the language and culture, not for anything college related. My main concern is that, if I take it, I will have 7 classes senior year, not including marching band. 5 of which are AP’s

I guess I just can’t decide if I want to take the class badly enough to have a 7:00 to 2:48 school schedule.

How about you take the class in the spring only, when you won t have to deal with writing applications?

Unfortunatley that is not an option at my school. :frowning: it is a year long class
