I will be entering senior year in September and this whole time have been planning to take four years of Latin, since colleges like four years of the same language. Truth is, I really dislike Latin and after three years of it, don’t enjoy the class anymore. My school offers an ASL honors course for seniors and I’m really interested in learning more about it. Would selective colleges look down on switching from Latin to ASL? Would they consider it a “foreign language” and could it possibly add up to four years of language? I’d be willing to take Latin one more year, if it means improving my application, but I’d rather not, if this schedule change could be explained somehow during admission process.
You’d only have three years of a foreign language, plus one year of an elective (ASL can count but just one year wouldn’t.)
It all depends what colleges you’re interested in.
Highest level matters. Level 4 looks better than level 3 + level 1.
Look at; the recommendations/requirements of the schools you are considering applying to. If any colleges want 4 years of foreign language then you should stick with Latin. When a college wants 4 years of a foreign language, they are looking for applicants to get to level 4 of one language.
