So I screwed up my freshmen year and I'm trying to fix it by get As in all my regular classes currently. I had a 1.0 freshmen year at first with 3 Fs and 3 Cs (my parents were cheap with materials and it was an online school). With grade recovery, it'll only be 2.375 (I had a 3.5 before high school). This year, I'm getting As in all my classes but they're not high As (last quarter, I had a 92, 94, 94, 90, 93 (Art), 91 (Theatre), and 98). I could handle the material and I found everything really easy but I made some small mistakes every now and then. I really want to get into a good college so I wanted to take 5 APs next year (which my counselor allowed me to do) but now I don't think I can afford to get Bs even if they are in AP classes. My biggest reaches right now are U Michigian and Boston University. Would it be possible to get into those colleges if I take mostly regular classes? I'll definitely self-study some APs and get good scores on the SAT and SAT subjects too.

The reason I need at least a 3.5 is a result of me living in Florida. I'd really like to get a Bright Futures scholarship or at least get some money. My parents make a lot of money (around 80,000$ annually) so we won't get much from FAFSA. I also have a not-that-great home life so I don't want to end up co-signing a loan with my parents. Not being able to get into certain colleges isn't the only thing that matters for me. I also want to afford going to them too.

I wouldn’t take all standard classes. Have you considered Honors? Even if you have, I think the best idea would be to integrate standard, honors, and maybe one or two AP classes so you can raise your GPA safely while still taking some higher-level classes. You could calculate it out to make a plan of what grades you’d have to keep in certain classes in order to successfully raise your GPA in time. I would help you with that, but I don’t know how many classes you’ve taken so far.

I also like the students better in regular classes. I was in pre-IB before and I know IB/AP students currently. A lot of them can be grade-obsessed ■■■■■■■■. People in regular classes tend to be more easy-going.

I’m not sure what I think about Honors. I’m not sure I’d be able to maintain straight As for the next two years in anything but regular classes although I think I might be able to take around 1 or 2 APs and 1 or 2 Honors classes. I’m definitely going to do that!

Could you please? I feel like I need some feedback. This is going to look terrible but these are my classes and my grades:

Algebra I Honors (middle school): B
Physical Science (middle school): A
Chemistry (9th grade): F: C (grade recovery by the end of 10th grade or during 11th grade)
Geometry (9th grade): F: C (grade recovery for the first semester currently and grade recovery for the second semester by the end of 10th grade)
French I (9th grade): F: C (grade recovery by the end of 11th grade)
English I (9th grade): C (I barely passed but during the end of the year, the thought of having a 0.85 gpa for 9th grade scared me. It was difficult without the materials though so I just guessed a lot.)
World Geography (9th grade): C
PE/Health (9th grade): C (I don’t even know how this occurred.)

I also have an A for the first semester of English II in there. I started in the middle of the year so I don’t have certain 1st semester grades but I’m working on them for my core classes. I’m currently getting As in Biology, World History, English II, Geometry (grade recovery), Art, Theatre, and Health Science. I’m taking English III Honors, Art History Honors, and HOPE online and I have As in them but FLVS’s really easy. I’m also taking Algebra II (regular) on a school computer and I have an A. Currently, I have 6 credits (Algebra I, Physical Science, English I, World Geography, PE/Health, 1st sem. English II and 1st sem. Geometry).

If my gpa wasn’t so screwed up, I probably wouldn’t care as much.

I have nothing against AP and/or IB students. The ones at my school just aren’t the nicest though. I’ve overheard a lot of them calling people with 2.0-3.4 gpas r*tards and observed them looking down on many people.

Thanks, I’ll try that! Which regular classes would be best to take? Would it depend on my strengths and weaknesses?

I get what you’re saying. Some are a little egotistical at my school as well.

You hit it on the dot. Based on your best classes this year, which are your 94’s and 98’s , choose accordingly. Personally, I would choose 1-2 AP’s in your best subject(s) for your situation. I really don’t think (and no offense) that you would be ready for 5. Take 3 Honors, and for your weak subject, take a regular class.

Another important question regards the weighting scale at your school. How many grade points does a regular/IB/AP/Honors class count for? This is very important as it will greatly influence your overall GPA.

Is the 3.5 GPA for Bright Futures weighted or unweighted?

My 98’s in Health Science and my 94s are in Geometry and World History. I don’t think I’d like APUSH as it seems to focus more on breadth over depth. I’m a perfectionist too so I’d worry about not completing much. With regular World History this year, I get more time to research things and write in-depth essay answers. Do you think 3 would be okay if two of those APs are electives? I might take dual enrollment English if my GPA’s high enough. Yeah, especially after my first two years of high school. I feel like I should focus on recovering my GPA over anything else.

I want to take regular Chemistry as it’d be unpleasant being surrounded by lots of sophomores in Chemistry Honors if I’m a junior. Also, I need an A in it to get a C for grade recovery. I want to be on safe side. I’ve also heard it’s best to learn Chemistry at a slower pace and I usually do better when I understand everything involved.

A point is added for IB/AP/Honors classes.

It’s weighted but I’d like a 3.5 uw.

What do you think of this schedule?

Regular Pre-calculus
Regular US History
Regular Chemistry
AP English Language
AP Psychology
AP Studio Art
French I

I’d take AP psych, since you’ll be in precalc. I also would recommend taking the AP english if you think you can handle it, but it depends on how hard it is at your school. English difficulty varies a ton from school to school, even from teacher to teacher.

Hmm, I’d probably end up choosing AP Psychology over AP Stats. Two math classes in one year might be overwhelming.

I’m still torn about whether I should take English IV Honors or AP Language. I don’t want to end up getting a B in English next year especially as my GPA’s still low-ish.
