Hi! I am going to be a senior next year and I am wondering if I should take AP Bio. My school is on a block schedule meaning my classes are usually only a semester long but AP Bio is one of the few year long courses. I would be dropping AP GoPo and AP Euro to take it. I really like Bio and got an A in honors my freshman year. My main concern is the time commitment of it. During the fall semester I would have it with AP Calc which is a class I’m already super nervous for. I’m also involved in lots of extracurriculars that take up a good portion of my time and am not really willing to drop them my senior year. I know all AP classes are lots of work I’ve just heard that the AP Bio teacher assigns A TON. I would just like to know if it would be worth it to try to take the class. I would like to major in either Comp Sci or Civil Engineering in college.
Oh also I would totally be fine if I ended the class with a B! As long as it wasn’t a C or lower I would be perfectly happy!
Could you share what the rest of your schedule looks like?
Personally, I wouldn’t take AP bio, but it depends on the rest of your course load.
I’m planning on going into architecture, so a lot of my courses have been on an engineering path. To my understanding, none of these classes will glow. In terms of science, they’re looking for physics, and in terms of history, they favor world history (euro being second to that). I think that euro and gov/politics would be smarter, but it still depends on the rest of your schedule.
If you’d like to share, knowing what colleges you’re interested in would also help.
Sure! I’m planning on taking Theatre Advanced Honors (year long), AP Calc AB, AP English Lit, AP Comp Sci Principles, and Civics Honors. The way that my schools sets up our classes though is that we are only taking 4 a semester. I would have taken AP World but my school didn’t offer it until my sophomore year and only offered it to freshmen.
I think that AP Bio would be a better choice as a class, but it also depends on time. You said that the teacher assigns a lot of work, which could be difficult to manage, and since it’s your senior year, you definitely don’t want to burn out.
Since you said that you’d be okay with a B, I would suggest taking AP Bio, but you obviously have to make the final call.
Also, you had said that you’re worried about AP Calc AB. While it depends on teachers, I felt that calculus was one of the easier math classes that I have ever taken. I wouldn’t worry too much about it!!
AP Bio is a ton of work, and if you’re not a real lover of science, I’d consider not taking it –– especially if you’re sacrificing 2 other APs to do it.
You’ve already taken honors bio…unless you’re really interested in biology, I wouldn’t bother taking it. What other sciences have you taken?
Are you more of a humanities/social science or STEM student or both?
Honors or academic bio is a graduation requirement at my school otherwise I would have just waited to take AP. Other than that I’ve taken Chemistry honors and APES. STEM subjects have definitely always been my stronger subjects but I still do pretty well in humanities.
