My plan is to take AP Bio junior year and the APES senior. I have no interest in physics and do not have any desire to go into a STEM field, but biology and the environment interest me. I know APES has a reputation of being easy and I don't want to be looked down on by colleges. Will this impact my admissions to BU, AU, or any other college that I may apply to (AU/BU are the highest ranked schools on my list) for journalism? I have a fairly high GPA, test scores, and ECs. Of course, if I was going into STEM, it would be important to take the most rigorous classes, but is that the case for an aspiring journalism major?

i really don’t think any college will be like, “oh, you took apes senior year? /autoreject/” but they might have a problem with your not taking physics. i mean, i understand why you don’t want to, though.

and i took ap bio and ap chem junior year, along with physics (…this was a bad idea), and i’m only taking apes now for senior year. let me say, the class is SO easy. but the fact that it’s my only science this year could play into that a little bit. i can still tell the class is relatively easy, though. if possible, i would take apes before ap bio, in order to prepare yourself for ap bio.

Don’t worry TOO much about the classes you take in HS compared to what you want to major in. I’m in apes right now, and it’s not too difficult. Most of it is hardly any science, and you study it like you would history. So far for me I’ve had to memorize several environmental activists in the history, some economic/environmental thing. A cakewalk compared to other AP sciences.

Regardless any AP class isn’t “looked down” upon. It’s highly recommended that you have at least a year of each of the sciences though (bio, chem, phys)

Thank you both!
So do you think it would be TERRIBLE if I didn’t take physics at all? I know it’s recommended, but is it THAT big of a deal?

Its just recommended. If you were in all rigorous courses throughout high school, I doubt no Physics on your transcript will be a minor blip. I do know that BU does “want” Physics - I emailed Admissions about a month ago about it since I’m not taking Physics, either…

If you’ve got everything else going for you, I think you’ll be fine. Kids have gotten into ivies at my school without Physics.

It’s not terrible. It’s just for your own sake, and for general knowledge sake. Taking a class from each of the 3 realms of science (chem, bio, phys) will give you a good balanced knowledge to take to college. Recommended but not required.
