I took Latin I my sophomore year and Latin II my Jr year. I got an A in both classes, but I still don't feel like I've got the class completely down. I think I can get it if I take the time and actually work a bit more to it. We've already covered all the grammar in Latin I, so that's no issue. It would just be translation from here on out.

Pros:
It would show that I stuck it out for all four years of Latin.
It would give me a huge advantage if I took Latin in college, assuming I don't get credit for it.

Cons:
Language credit doesn't always get you out of the class in college.
It's a ton of work and I have hard classes even without it.
I'm not the best at translation.

What route do you suggest I go?

I say that you should do it, as long as it’s not too much work on top of your other classes. AP classes aren’t just about credit; they also show that you want to learn and are challenging yourself. Latin is certainly useful, whether you want to go into liberal arts OR math & science. So I say, take AP Latin; I’m sure you’ll learn a lot.

Oh, and P.S. only take it if the teacher’s good. If you’ve got a crummy teacher, I say either take AP Latin online or it’s not even worth it because whether your teacher is good or bad makes all the difference.

And don’t worry if you’re bad at translating. Everyone is bad the first time they try something. That’s part of the challenge!

Also depends on where you want to go to college and how many extracurriculars you’re taking on. Selective schools? I say take it. Not-so-selective? Then maybe don’t take it.

I would take AP latin. As long as you know all your grammar you will be fine. Coming into AP my translating skils were so bad. At the beginning of the year I really struggled translating and questioned whether or not I should had taking the course . However, I found that as time went on I got better at translating. Virgil’s style for me was new and I had never really taken the time to translate. If you are willing to put the time in, you will be fine. Be aware though that you will have a heavy homework load. Good luck and “arma virumque cano” ;P
