Should I take AP or Dual Enrollment

I am currently a freshman in high school and will have finished my English credits for high school at the end of this year through a program called ATYP where I did 2 years of English each year since 8th grade. I can continue the program and take Ap Lit and AP Lang together my sophomore year, but my dad wants me to dual enroll in English classes at Western Michigan because of the college credit. Which should I do, and what do more selective colleges like MIT prefer?

Dual enroll English is probably better, although these things won’t really matter (you are looking too closely at the wrong thing).

However, if AP is weighted more, go with AP (although again, to schools like MIT, UW matters more).

The most important thing is to take a class you can be successful in.
DE classes are off campus so you have the hassle of transportation…and they will be included in your college GPA. So you need to be able to do well in.

Also you need to figure out if:

  1. Will you get credit at the college? For college courses taken to meet HS requirements, sometimes you don’t.
  2. Will the credits transfer?
  3. What would you do with those credits? Will you get to skip that class? will you just get Gen Ed classes?

I think you need to figure out if you are going the “Get lots of credits in HS so you don’t have to pay as much in college” route or the “Top colleges” route.

If you were looking at your State U, then you could graduate early with many credits already taken in collge and therefore pay for less semesters.

If you are going for MIT, you have to find out how they treat transfer credits…maybe the AP route would be the best.

Talk to your guidance counselor for advice.

Without knowing more specifics…our rule of thumb is, take AP if you are seriously likely to attend an OOS school, DE if you are likely to stay in state.
