Should I take AP or get a job?

I will be a junior in high school next year, and have the opportunity to take AP. I don't have a job or after school activities, so I have plenty of free time. This will be my first time taking an "Advanced" class, besides the fact that I took Honors World History and passed with a B. My parents are pushing me to take more advanced classes, since they feel I am not being pushed hard enough in school (which is true, things come easily to me). Anyway, next year I'm taking:
AP English (got a high B in it my freshman year, and an A this year)
AP Psychology (took the intro course, and it's very interesting.
What do you guys think? Should I take more? Or get a job?
And please justify your opinion. Thanks.

Do you need to work during the school year to help support your family?
Have you reviewed this question with both your family and the college counseling office at your high school?

Siliconvalleymom’s questions are all important ones. I would add to them: what kinds of colleges are your targeting? Are you thinking of applying to highly selective colleges and universities, or are you really targeting ones where the admissions standards are, let us say, more relaxed? You need much more demanding high-school preparation to gain admission to Northwestern than you do for Northwest Oklahoma State.

^ Northwestern and Northwest Oklahoma State, they can not be compared. They are very different level of colleges.

Right. Obviously. That was my point.

I don’t need to work, but a little money wouldn’t hurt, lol. I was planning to go to a community college for two years first, then going to ASU, since I live in Arizona.

In that case, your prospects for transferring to ASU will depend on your community-college transcript and recommendations more than your high-school transcript. I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t get a job outside school as long as you’re taking college-preparatory classes too.

Having a job and taking AP or honors courses is not difficult. I’ve held down two jobs for three years and will continue to do so for senior year. It limits your sleep time and extracurricular opportunity, but just one job isn’t hard.

Does anyone know if community colleges take AP credit?

Why can’t you do both? I managed a job, Varsity soccer, 2 AP’s and 2 honors classes with A’s in all of them first semester.

Many community colleges award credit for AP exams. They also usually award credit for CLEP exams which are shorter, easier, and can be scheduled at any time of the year. Check the websites of the community colleges you are interested in, or just pick up the phone and call their admissions offices to ask.

Good luck!

…Can you handle both? I’d do both if I were you xD. Imagine though, taking AP courses, plus good EC’s, it looks better on transcripts

Haha my parents are doing the complete opposite. They discourage me from taking too much AP courses, because they already worry about my sleeping habits, LOLOL (I pull a few all nighters) Of course I signed up for it anyways.
