Should I take AP Spanish?

Currently I’m a sophomore taking Spanish 4 (no option for Honors), and I plan on taking AP Spanish Language next year. At my school we have these AP/Honors meetings before registration where the AP/Honors teacher talks about the class. So I went to the AP Spanish Language meeting on Monday, and it was PACKED with people–most of them native Spanish speakers. I think there were only about three of us who weren’t. So I’m really worried that my application essay (which has to be written in Spanish) won’t be as good as the others, and I’m also afraid that if I get in, I’ll be struggling a lot because I’m not as knowledgeable in Spanish as almost everyone else.

I have an A+ in Spanish 4 right now, and I’ve always had A’s in Spanish, so I don’t know if I should stress about this or not. Some people have been saying that AP Spanish is only for advanced students, though. Application deadlines are coming up soon and I want to get mine in as early as possible. Can you guys help?

even though I’m hispanic, i know there is a lot of people in my spanish advanced class that are white - most of them will take ap. I wouldn’t worry about it.

@Decepters Thanks for your encouragement! I’ll try not to worry but it’s still stressing me out. I really want to take the class but I don’t know if I can handle it. I know the AP teacher (although not very well), and he’s really nice and fun, so hopefully he’ll help me with my struggles.

In my experience, AP Spanish Lang is pretty rigorous. We have homework all the time and have very little downtime in class. But, if you had good grades in Spanish IV you should be just fine. Native speakers often blow the other students out of the water but it’s very plausible to receive a 3-5 on the AP test, and that’s all that matters. I actually like taking the class a lot.

@gminor Thanks! Do you think I can get a 5 on the AP exam?

You have to be able to read Spanish passages and answer questions, do a vocal portion, write an essay in spanish, write an e-mail in spanish…

You have to be really good at spanish to get a 5. You have to be almost as good as a native speaker.

I think most places accept a 4 though for credit.

I had this same question. It is possible. If you can handle the Honors work that well, as long as you stay dedicated, you can do it. I’m worried about taking it, too!
