So I’m a junior in high school, and today we got our forms to sign up for our senior classes. I’ve been thinking all day of what to choose. I want to go to the University of Michigan, and on their website, it says that Chemistry is highly recommended to go into Engineering there. I would really, really not like to take chemistry in high school, but it seems U of M really wants it. Now, the other option is to take Physics 2 at my local community college, which I want to do, but im not sure which would look better for college. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!
Most engineering programs expect to see some level of bio, chem, physics and one of those at the AP level. If you haven’t taken any chemistry courses, I would strongly recommend listening to UM’s recommendation.
You also don’t want your first exposure to chemistry to be in college.
Having a year each of bio, chem, and physics, would look better. Having that plus one of those at an advanced level would look best.
UM is highly competitive. If they suggest/recommend it - and you don’t have it even though your high school offers it - your app is at a disadvantage.
And it wouldn’t only be UM where you would be at a disadvantage trying to get into Engineering without a year of Chemistry.
